Forskolin : A Traditional Remedy with Modern Scientific Interest

Forskolin is a natural compound extracted from the root of the Indian coleus plant (Coleus forskohlii), traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Although it is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for medical use, forskolin has gained attention for its potential to increase levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP), a molecule that regulates various cellular functions. Research on its benefits remains limited and mixed, but traditional and early scientific studies suggest several possible health applications. Forskolin may help relax bronchial muscles, making it beneficial for asthma management, and has been shown to reduce intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients. It also exhibits heart-strengthening and blood vessel–widening effects, which may support cardiovascular health. Some evidence suggests that forskolin can influence metabolism and body composition by promoting fat breakdown and supporting testosterone production, though more comprehensive research is needed to confirm these effects. Overall, forskolin remains a promising but not yet fully validated herbal compound in modern medicine.
